Meet Emerson. She is a beautiful, funny, smart and extremely brave sixteen month old baby girl (at the time this image was taken) who had some very harsh news given to her parents in January, 2017. At only fourteen months old, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This is a very aggressive form of Leukemia. For anyone who doesn’t know “Acute” means that this leukemia can progress quickly if not treated, and would probably be fatal in a few months. “Myeloid” refers to the type of cell this leukemia starts from. Unlike other cancers, AML does not occur in stages. Instead, it tends to be found spread throughout the bloodstream at the time of diagnosis, and may have invaded an organ. As a result of its ability to affect the whole body at once, it must be treated aggressively as soon as possible. This photograph was taken while Emerson was going through one of her many rounds of Chemotherapy at Hasbro Children's Hospital, in Providence, Rhode Island. Since this image was taken, Emerson was cleared to be discharged and went into remission over the summer of 2017. Unfortunately, at Christmas time, just months later, she developed a infections that put her in the PICU at Hasbro Children's Hospital. This is when they received the devistaing news that she once again was about to battle for her life as the cancer came back, and this time much stronger than the first. These images show her strength and power as she conquers an illness most adults will never have to, spending more than half her life in the hospital to date.
